The Lodger is one of the most compelling books I have read in years. An extremely well researched fiction, it explores so many aspects of the early 20th century from which we learn so much. However it is the characters, so well crafted which the the writer navigates us through in her deft and fluid manner, which drew me in, to the point where I could not put it down. It is a story about a dark but passionate relationship, the torment of betrayal, life and the goings on a a boarding house, sexual awakening, suffragettes and so much more. We the reader are easily transported into the world of the characters. It is a powerful book, eloquent, sensitive and entirely captivating. I was gripped throughout and so sorry when it ended. I can't recommend it more highly.

Louisa treger transports the reader convincingly into the world of a twentieth century writer who serves as a prototype for women today independent, aware of her rights, unconventional and a creative trailblazer. The novel's style is appropriately edwardian and the tension holds right till the conclusion. A worthy debut.
What a literary gift this book was. I was mesmerized by Dorothy's journey and savored every page. Looking forward to Ms. Treger's next effort.
I'm still revisiting The Lodger by Louisa Treger in my mind, several days after finishing the book. It was a wonderful companion at the end of a busy working day, for me to re-engage with Dorothy's London life.....her drab and often desperate situations, the choices she made in her relationships and how they collided with each other, with consequences that made for often riveting reading. I felt immersed in Dorothy's London life and loved the learning that such a well-researched book can surface without distracting one from the central story. There are instances of great despair for Dorothy and I remember feeling privileged to have read so intimate an account of such personal drama .....an unusual experience ....and being conscious of my surprise that this was a debut novel. I hope we'll soon see more from Louisa Treger.
Excellent read. I had never heard of Dorothy Richardson, but am glad I learned about her and the way she
changed writing. Her affair with H. B. Wells was an interesting insight into English life at that time. I would definitely
recommend reading it.
I was delighted to find this novel about Dorothy Richardson, an author I've long admired (we read her alongside Virginia Woolf in graduate school). This really brought her to life for me, and the story of her love affair with H.G. Wells, her friend's husband, was compelling and believable. Louisa Treger's prose is beautiful, too. Often I just stopped and read a sentence again, I liked it so much.

A beautifully written novel about Dorothy Richardson's life as an independent woman in London, and her relationship with HG Wells. It gives a powerful evocation of what life was like as a lodger and working girl at that time, and the difficulty of having very limited means. There are fascinating descriptions of Dorothy's experience of writing, and her observations of HG Well's writing. We learn what it was like to be part of the suffragette movement through Dorothy's relationship with Veronica, another lodger in the same house. I heartily recommend this book.
A very interesting novel. Wonderful description and beautiful poetic use of
language. One even feels the sunshine in the garden and the humidity in the
room. The detail images make it a very easy read since we are involved in
the story from the beginning with characters full of human emotions. The
author's non judgemental approach to the facts opens our minds and makes it
an interactive piece of work, which it is difficult to find in this period.
I look forward to more novels from L. Treger.
