This was the first Margaret Mahy book I ever read and I fell in love with this woman's writing within minutes of cracking open the first page.

This is one of the books that is on my yearly reading list, meaning that I read this book every single year. Sometimes more than once.

The writing is beautiful, and richly imaginative. You'll be reading along and it's good, plain writing, but then suddenly you'll find yourself tangled up in such gorgeous prose that you just have to sit there and read over it again a couple times just to savor it.

The title states that it's a supernatural romance, and that's true enough, but it's way more complicated than that. It's a strange, modern-day hero's journey and one that, while the writing can be enjoyed by anyone, is intensely feminine in nature. It's a journey that every girl faces as she starts growing up. And it's through that journey, and coming in to her own, that she saves the day.

It's a magical story, but it's not a wand-waving, the gods descending on earth, or some darkling hero adventure story. It's magical and subtle, and the story is told as much through nuance as through action.

Laura Chant is the delightful 14-year-old heroine of “The Changeover”. Her story is supported by her mother, Kate and 3-year-old brother, Jacko, whereupon it is gate-crashed by Chris Holly, Kate’s new friend, Sorry (Sorrenson) Carlisle, 17-year-old seventh-former and school prefect, and the antagonist, Carmody Braque. Laura suspects Sorry to be a witch, although his intriguing mother and grandmother are confirmed witches, as even Kate knows this. We find Sorry to be many things as the novel progresses, however, he always remains a pleasing character that we want to learn more about.

The novel starts with Laura waking up with a knowing sense of alarm of what the day will bring. Anyone who suffers pangs of paranoia or perception (aren’t they the same thing) at the start of day will recognise this. However, in Laura’s case, the foretelling results in actuality. However, as the reader soon finds out, the warnings she has received prior e.g. about Sorry are not realised as danger.

There are a couple of changeovers, the one the title refers to that Laura must decide upon, and the prior changeover of sorts that affects Jacko. I won’t give anything away. “The Changeover” is a charming tale of relationships, the changes that they undergo as events unfold and decisions are made, and definition such as of witches and of evil itself. On a reread a decade or so later, it is still fresh, and the ending satisfying.

This book won the Carnegie Medal in 1984. It is a modern classic and reprinted several times. Despite this, Harper Collins, the publisher in 2003, didn’t do a good job of proofing it. There were typos sprinkled through Margaret Mahy’s picturesque prose and tight plot. Pronouns attributed to the wrong gender, “touch proposition” rather than “tough proposition” and so on.

Nevertheless, the plot races along following an interesting and original premise in a sort of horror, sort of fantasy, coming of age tale.
I read this book for the first time more than ten years ago and I loved it. I finally decided to look it up again a couple of years ago and I still felt the same way so finally I purchased it. I highly suggest people give this book a try.
I loved this book in school and read it many times. I didnt recieve the cover in the photo like I wanted, but the book is still VERY worth buying! Read it if you like supernatural romances!
I adore this book; it was one of my favorites during my pre-teen and teen years. It follows Laura Chance through a mystical adventure to save her little brother from a psychic vampire intent in drinking his life-force. It gave me hope that I could change myself and alter my own future.
I studied the book at university and have passed around this book to many fiends that I lost it along the way, now that I have been a teacher for 20 years I would love to bring this magic back to the kids and sought high and low for a copy. The book is written in New Zealand but could easily be Australia, it about a child that has his youth sucked out of him be Sharman and its his sister wish to changeover to a witch to beat this sharman and with the help of her friend Carmody a male witch they go on a quest to save her brother's life
Laura is a normal girl with a sweet younger brother and a frazzled single mother. Her life is ordinary until the day her brother is stamped with the image of a horrible man. Laura turns to Sorry, an older, intriguing boy who she believes to be a witch. Will he be able to help her?

This story is entrancing to read. I first read it as a 13 year old, and I still find it fascinating. It is a great read, especially for those interested in witchcraft stories.
As an advanced reader growing up in a very small town, my parents gave me a note to the librarian which opened up all of the books for me to check out. This was the first book that I checked out from the young adult section, and instantly became one of my favorites. Through the years the story had never left me and I recently decided to buy a copy to see if it was really that good.

It was indeed. Reading it again gave me the same thrill that I got the first time, only I am older now and understood more of the nuance. It's protaganist is a teenage girl that has true strength and bravery. This was incredibly refreshing because it was not portrayed by sassy comments in a tiresome I-am-woman-hear-me-roar dialog that many authors pass off as womanly strength.

I have a hard time believing that there are only 34 reviews written about this gem but, then, I suppose the reason why it is so very appealing is because not everyone would get it.
