The Burn Zone A Haan Novel James K Decker 9780451413406 Books

The “Burn Zone” follows the pell-mell adventures of Sam Shao, an orphan searching for her adoptive father who has disappeared during tensions within and without the area. The action plays out against the backdrop of an Asian city type of territory and in the near future, a future where aliens have made first contact.

Is/was this contact an accident or intentional? You have to read to come to your own conclusion.

Author James K. Decker draws you into the humid, hot and fly (in this case, the scale fly) infested city. I was reminded of the urban cop movies that were so popular in the 1970’s - gritty, crumbling neighborhoods and the people that live there just trying to make a living however they can and not end up dead. Decker then takes this genre and combines it with science fiction. There are background whispers hinting that not all is well on this alternative Earth, with various governments at odds with one another.

I enjoyed this sci-fi meets real world meets urban novel and recommend to anyone willing to try something different from urban fantasy or the usual spaceship-based science fiction.

The Burn Zone A Haan Novel James K Decker 9780451413406 Books Reviews

Starts out strong with a vibrant and colorful setting that draws natural comparisons with 'Blade Runner'. Great ideas with a lot of action, but kind of ran out of steam for me toward the end. Neat twist though and I definitely recommend it.
I liked this book; it was an interesting concept with several surprising twists. Mr. Decker kept me interested throughout, and the story progressed rapidly yet coherently. Spend your money on this one.
It was great for the first half. After that... all the details got in the way of the story. The ending was not really satisfying. I felt that the author spent way too much time hammering out action details without filling in critical plot details.
I read a lot , but this is the first time I read anything from this author, its good , I enjoyed it if I see anything else from this author and it looks interesting I will buy it
The Burn Zone is an intense science-fiction thriller set in the futuristic city of Hangfei. Sam, her friend Vamp, and the haan called Nix take you on a roller coaster ride that suddenly drops out from under you in the last few chapters. The twist at the end is shocking as well as intriguing; it will leave you pondering for days. The technology is cool and the writing is fearless. I loved this book.

I read the prequel novella, Ember, before starting The Burn Zone (TBZ) and though it's not necessary to read Ember in order to understand and follow the plot of TBZ, it does provide insight into a critical piece of the history between Sam and her adoptive father Dragan. After reading Ember I started page one of TBZ rooting for Sam and empathizing with her wholeheartedly as she raced to save the only father she'd ever known.

In The Burn Zone, the relationship between the humans of Hangfei and the alien race called the haan is fascinating and complex as they struggle for space, food and survival. I loved the idea of humans as surrogate parents to haan infants, as well as the technology which allows Sam (as one of the surrogates) to sense the haan's emotions. The small details, such as the wet drives implanted in the human skull, instantly accessible internal chat windows and the frequent AI pop-up advertisements help put the reader in the high-stimulus setting. Learning about the haan and their unexpected abilities as the plot unfolded had me captivated. There's even a dash of romantic tension for those who need a little love in their stories.

The Burn Zone is phenomenal! I highly recommend this novel to all fans of science fiction and to anyone who is thinking about giving sci-fi a chance. I am already looking forward to book two.
From the description I was expecting, well, a lot. What I felt I got was a lot of teenage angst. "Who am I, What's my purpose in life, How do I count", and on and on. I felt it rather tiring as the reader follows the angst-ridden female person chasing, being chased, looking for dad, being chased, looking for dad....etc, etc.

I'd like to have seen a bit more plot developement earlier on in the story, 'cause as I said, all the chasing made me tired....of her, of the story, of her struggles. I wanted to like her more. But was too tired.
