I've only read two of Derrick Jensen's books, but after reading A Language Older Than Words I was a big enough fan to go on to this one. I am a truth seeker and found more than I bargained for when delving into the thoughts and facts that Derrick Jensen has written. Weeks after finishing the second book, and months after finishing the first, I am still talking about things he said. I can't help but wonder, if everyone read this book with an open mind, and courageously faced the way we allow/support production to come before people (say nothing of the natural world), if maybe just maybe, we might be able to start turning things around on this planet.Tags : The Culture of Make Believe [Derrick Jensen] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Derrick Jensen takes no prisoners in The Culture of Make Believe, his brilliant and eagerly awaited follow-up to his powerful and lyrical A Language Older Than Words. What begins as an exploration of the lines of thought and experience that run between the massive lynchings in early twentieth-century America to today's death squads in South America soon explodes into an examination of the very heart of our civilization. The Culture of Make Believe is a book that is as impeccably researched as it is moving,Derrick Jensen,The Culture of Make Believe,Chelsea Green Publishing,1931498571,9781931498579,Good & Evil,Race relations;Economic aspects.,Racism.,Racism;Economic aspects.,Discrimination & Racism,Economic aspects,Ethnic minorities & multicultural studies,GENERAL,General Adult,International Relations - General,International relations,Nature & Environment,Non-Fiction,PHILOSOPHY Good & Evil,PHILOSOPHY Political,POLITICAL SCIENCE International Relations General,Philosophy,Political,Political ScienceInternational Relations - General,Race relations,Racism,Racism & racial discrimination,SOCIAL SCIENCE Discrimination & Race Relations,Social & political philosophy,Social ScienceDiscrimination & Racism,Social discrimination,Social discrimination & equal treatment,United States, current events; society; history; american; abuse; violence; domestic abuse; building; community; ecology; environment,International economic relatio,Race relations,Racism,Social aspects,Ethnic minorities & multicultural studies,International relations,Social discrimination & equal treatment,Racism & racial discrimination,Social & political philosophy,Social discrimination

He is amazing! I read this book over and over and learn more each time.
Derrick Jensen does a superb job weaving issues like environmentalism, racism, and sexism together as a way to explain Western Civilization's problems. It is usually seen as normal for people within our culture to look down on more "primitive" societies, but this book challenges all of us in this Western age to consider the ways it was founded, how it operates today, and its future place in years to come. It's a long read, but the content is worth paying attention to and thinking deeply about.
One complex and powerful read.
This book is a masterpiece, outlining the history of civilization's assault on the natural world and all living things and analyzing the underlying pathology in detail, with example after example.
I assign this book when I teach Race and Ethnic relations to students at a University. This book really outlines the systematic process that people at the top of the hierarchy go through to maintain the status quo (status top). Any resistence is met by annihilation and no resistence means that the minority group has successfully been silenced. I highly recommend this book and Jensen's other book "A language older than words" that suggests that because of our unfortunate mentality ($$$$$$$$$$$$-though shall have no other gods before me) we have forgotten the language that allowed us to communicate as equals with other beings and the land, not as dominators focused on exploiting (see Raine Eisler's work). If you like to think, and most do not (let's not step out of our comfort level), this is a book that will get you thinking!!!
After diving into "A Language...." and establishing a new perception for seeing the world in a much different light, I whole heartly endorse Mr. Jensen as one of the few leading the way into a possible NEW WORLD order, one involving understanding, forgivness and redemption for the hate and greed that have been at the forefront of civilization.
With "Culture of Make Believe" Derrick has done the research for us, compiling hundreds of observations and conclusions about the current state of affairs which have lead us to the insanity of our present state. Read, observe and apply all that has been reveiled. Thank you Mr. Jensen for giving many the tools to see and hopefully a changed heart to act upon these atrocities that have kept us all from "experiencing" the world as human beings.
Highly recommended and a must read!
This is one of the most difficult books I've read, and I'm not known for shying away from difficult topics. Derrick Jensen looks deep into the dominant culture and what it does to women, indiginous people, race, the natural world, and why this culture has come to act as it does. It is painful to look so honestly, even at history you think you know, but find there are details you missed. It is a hard read, but if we don't start looking then how can we change it? I highly recomend it, even if it takes you over a year to finish as I did. Immeasurably thought provoking.
