Colt Harper is a Mississippi sheriff whose moral compass is slightly askew. Fast-paced. This stand-alone is easy to follow and difficult to put down. The violence is not graphic. No drag-you-down drama.Interesting storyline with descriptive writing. Believable dialogue and characters with distinct personalities.
No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.

The complex relations between blacks, whites and cops with PTSD in a small southern town is the backdrop for this page turner that is not so much a murder mystery as a character study.
This was my second foray into the Colt Harper series by Thompson. Like the first one, this was hard to put down, just because it was a smooth, enjoyable story.
Great read. Finished to soon. First experience with this Author and I'm more than impressed. Cover to cover keeps you entertained. Charactors that spring to life from the hand of a startling talent. Love, dealth, family feuds, murder and the effects of war all skillfully blended into one hell of a read.
Well-written and carefully paced, this is a great example of modern Southern noir. O suppose comparisons to "Justified" are inevitable, but this author is much more sympathetic to his characters. There is dark humor, to be sure, but not at the expense of the rural folk of Mississippi. I would say it has more in common with the Longmire novels of Craig Johnson. I'm looking forward to reading more of Sheriff Colt Harper.
Phillip Thompson's book blew me away! I happened to pick up the 2nd book in this series first - Outside the Law. I started it and was so intrigued, I had to go back and find the first book. I'm glad I did. Sheriff Colt Harper's backstory is well worth exploring. The author's use of startlingly fresh metaphors is really superb. Jeans hang on hips like laundry on a line, the Sheriff eats quickly like a hound under a porch, a forehead towers over eyebrows like a cliff, the back of a head hits the ground like a cantaloupe on a cement porch. Wow! I'm falling in love with Mississippi based on Thompson's descriptions of the landscape. I've got this compulsion to see the Tombigbee River! So, in short, this author has it all - great descriptions, fascinating characters, and story lines that go deep. The title says it all. Can't wait to get back into the next book and I'm so glad a third is in the works.
