This edition incorporates an original introduction from Moorside Press, including a biography, a critical discussion of Lawrence's place in the history of British Literature and a short contextual discussion of the book.
Written during his stay in New Mexico in 1924, but published in 1926, The Plumed Serpent is Lawrence’s tenth novel. The plot deals with primitive Mexican cults through the revival of an ancient religion seen through the eyes of Kate Leslie, at the start a tourist, by the end some kind of devotee. In some respects, the plot might be construed as secondary to Lawrence’s examination of the Mexican culture he found, using set-piece scenes such as the opening at a bull fight, the tea party at Tlacolula and the attack on Jamilteepec.
By having Kate Leslie removed by degrees from both her own social set, but also disengaged from a complete immersion into the ancient religion she is witnessing, Lawrence is able to provide a loose commentary on both. That she finally gives in to one side and not the other might be evidence enough to show what Lawrence was moving away from himself.

To me this initially seemed to be a novel by a very different D H Lawrence from the one who analyzed English social class and sexuality so interestingly in books like "Lady Chatterley's Lover." In "The Plumed Serpent" we have a Mexican general trying to save Mexico by reviving an ancient religious cult. Add the widow of an Irish patriot to the volatile mix and you have the necessary ingredients for another subtle and intriguing analysis of the complexities of sexuality and society. Very readable, and this edition is beautifully illustrated too.Product details

The Plumed Serpent Annotated edition by DH Lawrence Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A brilliant book, the period photos in this one are stunning, I looked around and bought this version for the quality of the presentation - just because it's an ebook doesn't mean it needs to be thrown together like a dog's dinner.
Am delighted to get my hands on this substantial Lawrence tome. When I was a lad, I had trouble differentiating between D.H. Lawrence and T.E. Lawrence, and once blurted out in English class that the author of 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' had died in a motorbike accident in the West Country. My don put me straight and I have not looked back. Nonetheless, I am always keen to build up my 'D.H' credentials- I recently came across an earlier work on . So here it is, Lawrence in Mexico. He certainly did see the world. And maybe he did like motorbikes too.
