I have a list of books that I read over and over. They are like "good friends", the ones that even though you don't see them everyday, or even often, when you do, you are able to immerse yourself in conversation. This book is on that list. I read "Lady" for the first time while in high school, and immediately fell in love with it. It's one of those stories that is able to transport you back in time, to a different place, to a different era. Like "To Kill A Mockingbird" one is immediately able to see, feel, and experience what life was like during the 1920's and 30's. It was a time far removed, socially, from today. Today, no one would give a second thought to Lady's secret, but in the twenties and thirties, it was scandalous, and, quite frankly, would ruin a person. When reading this story, one has to remember that. Thomas Tyron was a tremendous author, as well as a wonderful actor. His performance in "The Cardinal" was Oscar worthy. "Lady" was only one of several very good novels, as well as being the author of several great short story collections. If one is interested in an actors perspective of the golden age of Hollywood, the next book they should consider reading, of Mr. Tyron's is "Crowned Heads" and "All That Glitters" ......other books on my list of 'old friends'. I highly recommend this and the other novels of Thomas Tryon.

I read an online article today about the Native American Pequot tribe. I thought, hey, Pequot Landing, that's where my all-time favorite story, "Lady", takes place! I can't pinpoint exactly why it's my all-time favorite book; there are so many reasons and it's just a lovely story and a dear old friend. So I went browsing online, as I hadn't checked on e-book availability in a couple of years, and my hard covers and paperback are so worn, bindings so old the pages fall out. I am THRILLED to find this now in e-book format, and would buy it at (almost) ANY price! I first discovered this book in a paperback book exchange in the late 70s, while in college. I read it, loved it, and even loosely wrote a paper on it in college, captivated by the story's sections, "Old Songs", "New Songs", etc. "And the wind sang old songs..." begins the story. Likely stemming from this book, I have always loved stories with strong female characters. It is absolutely NOT like Tryon's "The Other" or "Harvest Home", neither of which I like - I don't go for spooky stuff like that. This is just a wonderful story (with a bit of suspense thrown in) about love, growing up, small town, family, interaction between young and old, old customs, imagination, right and wrong... I even have a gazing globe because Lady had one. I have literally read this book every 3-4 years, for the past 35 years, and enjoy it just as much now in my 50s as I did in my 20s. My only disappointment is that the cover has been modernized from the original, but don't judge this book by its cover. It's truly a gem.
Thomas Tryon has a great writing style. "The Other" & "Harvest Home" are great horror/mystery novels. "Lady" is well written, with believable characters & a great plot. The book gets better as it goes on with a very satisfying ending. To tell anything of the plot would be a disservice to someone who has not read "Lady". The description of small town life during the 1930's & 40's gives the reader visual sense with just a few words. Tryon was one of the great writers of late 20th century.
This is the one book that has influenced all of my adult life, hqaving first read it when I was a mere 27. I am now 69. If you are lucky or blest enough to obtain a copy, as it has been out of print for years (don't know why Hollywood never made it into a movie) please do not hesitate to do so. Under the guise of a seemingly pleasant novel lies some of the deepest truths of our all too human life. If you read it with heart and soul, it will change you for the better...and you will return to it over and over again. "Lady" is more that a simple tale of growing up in a small town in Connecticut in the 1930's. It's a series of lessons about life, and kindness, and understanding, and love. "Lady" is truly one of the great American novels, greater because of it's supposed simplicity. But look deeper and you will find, that like Jay Gatsby always watching the green light across the bay, you will watch for Lady Harleigh who lives in the old elegant, historic house on the other side of the village green. You'll want to know her and her embrace, her romance, her secrets and her mysteries. And as you read the last lines of the story you'll know that she will live in your heart forever.
I just finished this book and loved it. I had only recently read The Other and Harvest Home, so Thomas Tryon had already become one of my all-time favorite authors. Though there are some fine reviews of this book on , there are not as many as the aforementioned two, so I wanted to share my opinion. This book does start out a little slow, but as in Tryon's other books, he is setting the scene - painting a glorious picture of life in a bygone era. Tryon was a master at that, and was also a master in the element of surprise, so you don't really have an inkling of what Lady's secret is until it's finally revealed. Then, everything falls into place - well, almost. As with the other two books, I felt that the author deliberately left a few details to the imagination. The first two-thirds of the book seem to focus on the special friendship forged between Lady and her young neighbor friend, which I wasn't sure I understood, but after learning Lady's secrets I realized that since fate had left her childless, Woody most likely represented the child she wished she'd had. She called him the "friend of her youth", but I believe he was the child of her heart. I will not further spoil the story, which has been referred to as "beautiful" and "haunting". Haunting it is - as are all of Tryon's books that I have read - and beautiful, yes, in spite of many sad (and even some disturbing) events. I just wish this amazingly gifted author had lived long enough to continue writing, and I especially wish he had been able to finish the trilogy he was working on.
