This book is based on the premise that Sherlock Holmes was a real person, not a fictional detective, and that a school was started in his name to educate young crime-fighters for the future. I found this to be quite a charming, fun read. I figured out the "twists" but I'm a young-at-heart (adult) reader--and I still enjoyed the ride. There are a few parts where the story didn't flow as well, so this could use a tad more processional editing. Given the short length of the story, world-building is ok (though it could have been better). Character development was also pretty good (for Rollie and Cecily), given the length of the overall story. I found Rollie and Cecily to be charming protagonists, who even had a believably sometimes-bumpy relationship. Great Auntie Ei is fabulously intriguing (I'd love to know more about her). And Rollie's dad is a charming oddball background character. The instructors a bit cartoonish in their eccentricities, but I think they were meant to be archetypal extremes any way. I'll likely be back for Book 2 some time in the future.

There a few riddles and other puzzles (codes) that those with kids could solve while reading (though the answers, in most cases, are given within a few pages). I really didn't see much here for even the most conservative parents to be concerned about in this book. The language is pretty "clean". At one point, Rollie's arms are pinned by a villain (who later commits suicide by poison), but this is really rather a good, tame read for the intended age bracket.

Sherlock Academy is great! I can see this being really great for grades 4-6--it would make a great read aloud in the classroom. It has a HARRY POTTER feel with a BAKER STREET background. The story takes you inside the world of a Sherlock school set up in London to train kids to be detectives. There is a lot of fandom that will get behind this with clues, zany teachers, and relatable protagonists. Looking forward to seeing the series expand!!!
Loved these books. But still waiting for the next book in the series. Left me hanging.. Left me irritated. Come on...Book 4
Nice story about children aspiring to be Sherlock Holmes like detectives They model problem-solving and perseverance as they solve mysterious happenings at their school
Pretty good story. OK characters. The plot is pretty basic, but that's fairly common in a book targeted at this reading level. Characters are what really make a story, though, and these aren't compelling enough to make me want to read the next book in the series.
This book is an inspired tribute to Conan Doyle and to his most enduring creations _ Holmes, Watson and Moriarty. The book has every ingredient necessary to encourage younger (and, perhaps, older) readers to follow the master detective's exploits . Inserting quotes and instances from the 'real' Sherlock stories is a fine roundabout means of encouraging budding sleuths to 'investigate' further. I expect that this book will be the first of many in a series.
Sherlock Academy is a cute, readable, chapter book for elementary schoolers. The children are (what else?) mysteriously chosen to attend the Academy. They must de-code their class schedule. The library rearranges itself. The teachers are all specialists in Sherlockian crime solving methods. There’s classes in codes and disguises, among others. Rollin E. Wilson and his friends start their first year at school by arriving in a hansom cab. And, imagine! The playground is on the roof! How’s that for fun?

Finally the day comes when there is a real live mystery to solve…..Shhhh no spoilers!

Everything about this book is delightful. It would be a good silent read for the child or a nice bedtime read-aloud. Sherlock Academy by F.C. Shaw
I bought this for my nephew as it was recommended for a 3rd grade reading level and he enjoys the boxcar children mysteries. However, I would say that this is much more advanced than that. More sutible for a 6th or 7th grader vs. a 3rd grader.

A fun storyline, and the writing is good...I just would have held off buying it for a few years had I known it was more advanced.
