When I first picked up this series I really enjoyed it. I was excited by the idea of the mysterious blackouts, and I enjoyed the writing style. I also enjoyed the dynamic between the Heroine, Jaz, and her trainer/partner, Vayl. Jaz is smart and gutsy, but also has real vulnerabilities. She is a smart-ass, my personal favorite type of heroine.
I have to say I was disappointed in the second installment. Reason # 1: Character development: I felt like Jaz kept putting herself in unnecessarily risky situations, for no other reason than to, I really don’t know, appear stupid, give Vayl and the rest of the "gang" an opportunity to rag on her, give her a character flaw that she really doesn't need? I honestly have no idea why the author chose to go in this direction with her character, but I found myself again and again grimacing at her choices. I like my characters to be sassy, stubborn, AND smart. I did not find Vayl's character to be particularly complex or engaging. He is a vampire, really old and wise and tough yada yada yada. There is nothing unique about him.
The other issue I had with this book? Formula=boring=unmemorable. Sadly, because the story was not really all that different from a million other "urban fantasy" books I have read, and it did not have really awesome engaging characters to drive the reader's (my) interest, I actually forgot that I read it, or what it was about, until I went back to my kindle after getting an email asking me to review it, and looked up some of the things I had book-marked at the time of reading. It's pretty sad when you have to go re- read something to jog your memory. To me that says it was not a very good book in the first place (either that or you have a terrible memory, and should cut down on the mary-jane, which is not the case in this instance at all, I assure you).
On the flip side of this supposition, it was not memorably or notably bad either. So, if you are just looking for a light read, it would not be a bad choice to check out of the library for a cold winter night. I don't believe I would buy it again though.

A good series on getting the bad guys and having a good time doing the job
Jenifer Rardin does not disappoint her readers with this book. The story is fast paced and does a good job combining action and romance. The characters are well developed and the story is interesting enough to keep you wanting to know what happens next. This is a great book!
Love this series. Love the characters and the flow of the story. So wish Jennifer was still with us, a great author who new how to keep it interesting.
Pretty good series.
read all 8 books in a week lived them
Liked this book but nothing spectacular. The plot flew out of my mind the second I finished. The story moved along.
Enjoyed the second of Jaz Parks novels looking forward to the third. Like the funny dialog analogy that brought the first book alive an has done so in this one as well. Would like to see Vayl character develop more cracks in his armor while Jaz hard shell starts melting.
